Childhood re-imagined

This post was going to be about something completely different but then I was reminded what day it was.

In the world of comic nerdom it is the 5 anniversary of the death of Dwayne McDuffie.
How do I describe the effect that this man has had on my life......

No idea but when I was a younger maybe slightly less lazy girl nerd I was an avid reader of Marvel. Then Image, Wildstorm, Top Cow came into being and I started looking at different comics. One day my brother walked me to our local shop and I saw Icon. I laughed a bit because I was a comic book snob as a little girl and the artwork seemed less polished. I kept looking at the other books and saw Hardware, Blood Syndicate and Static. Unlike most people my initial favorites were  Hardware & Blood Syndicate at first.

I mean come on a Blood Syndicate was a gang (technically two gangs). That to me was so new and unusual. They had a dog that because self aware. He could talk. It was just amazing to a young mind. It wasn't the normal comic book of that era. So as a little girl it made me want to read more. I devoured every issue of the comics. Not really knowing or fully understanding the importance of Milestone changed when Static Shock came on tv. All of a sudden this little world of comics opened up and my classmates were talking about it. People asking have you seen it, do you know this new character, etc. I remember feeling wow this little world is being shared with everyone else. Something that was once just for the few of us that spend our allowances, chore money, birthday money and Christmas money on the comics was on my television.

Dwayne McDuffie among others made this girl's childhood and imagination a more fertile place.
